Review - Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

~WARNING! I MAY NOT RUIN THE STORY, BUT I’M NOT VERY CAREFUL IN HIDING PLOT TWISTS~
I just recently watched an anime series called Code Geass. I wasn’t all that sure of what I was getting into at the time, I just thought that it was going to be some kind of super hero type story.
As it turns out, Code Geass is one serious drama. I’m not talking about romantic drama either. I’m talking about the kind of drama where you can’t be guaranteed that any one character will survive up to and after the end credits of the last episode. Actually, you can feel almost confident that they WON’T survive if they have any sort of romantic feelings. The stronger the romantic feelings, the worse that person’s fate.
Code Geass is a story about a man named LeLouch trying to rebel against the empire of Britania (in the end, I’m not sure I would call Lelouch a “good guy” or not). Lelouch has been given the power of Geass which forces anyone to obey ONE command, no matter how much it goes against their nature. For example, “Die”, “Give me your KnightMare [Giant Robot]“, “Every day scratch a mark in that brick wall”, or “Kill all Japanese”.
Code Geass is not afraid of death, that is for sure. It’s no idealistic rebellion where they don’t use any terrorist type tactics. It’s not a war were innocents civilians don’t get caught up in the battles.
Although they didn’t have any problem showing a soldier gun down a woman and her children, I am glad they didn’t go to the extreem of having the soldiers relieve their sexual tension by raping that woman first. It always upsets me when they take a serious anime down that path.
Overall I would say Code Geass is entertaining and worth watching if you are in the mood for something serious. The animation is good (smooth and not a lot of reuse). The art is pretty good too, although I sometimes feel that they made some people too skinny in some scenes (like Lelouch in his Zero costume). There is very little fan service throughout, but they do have a little bit of nudity in some of the episodes… nothing extreme or anything.
As I understand they are currently airing the sequel to Code Geass in Japan right now. I look forward to watching it someday.
