Godel, Escher, Bach

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

I read the comics at XKCD as often as they come out with new ones.  Most of the time they are funny, but sometimes they are funny in ways that are so nerdy that I can’t stop laughing for several minutes.

This is a clear example:

Logic Joke

Now if you didn’t find that funny…  well you must not be a nerd I guess.  Godel was a famous mathematician who wrote many papers on logic and logical systems.  He basically proved that you can’t put everything in a nice clean package or universal theory of some kind. He especially proved that you can’t make a comprehensive list of all of BLANK.

For more about Godel check out this book (which I own a real physical copy of).

54 days beard growth in 11.4 seconds

Monday, August 11th, 2008

My friends (VQ and Sean) and I have been having a small “beard race.”  Basically we aren’t shaving for a year…  at this point I don’t think any of us are going to really make it.  I REALLY want to trim and maintain my beard better, but I’m not allowed to.

Anyways, we have been taking a picture a day of ourselves and posting them online for comparison.  I’m not to date on the site and Sean hasn’t updated their pictures 15 days at this point.  So, the site is a little useless.

Firefox’s Built-in Spellcheck Stinks

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

I was just writing an e-mail when I misspelled “Apparently.”  Firefox is great in that it told me that I misspelled it, but look at the suggestions it gives me:

Esperanto!?  What the heck? It’s like it’s looking for something that matches putting more weight on the letters further right rather then left.

I then added another P and it gave me what I was looking for.

Is there a plug-in for a better one out there?  Typing that same misspelling into a google search or dictionary.com search and they give me the correct suggestion (or at least something a little closer).

Flag Day!

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

In honor of flag day, I thought I’d share a little story about my childhood. When I was young, I believed so strongly that there was a special police taskforce dedicated to enforcing the rules on how to fly and handle the American Flag. I believed that if you violated any of these set rules, they would descend upon you in helicopters with machine guns, and the whole 9 yards. This belief was driving me mad one summer day in my earlier childhood.

I was selected to participate in the daily flag lowering ceremony at Sunset Beach in Cape May, NJ. I spent the whole day worrying about what to do. What if the flag touched the ground, what if I messed up folding it, what if brought it down to fast. The fear was just so much for me. Needless to say the time came to lower the flag, and everything went splendidly.

Anyways, if any of you happen to ever be in the area of Cape May, be sure to stop by Sunset Beach. Grab some food at the grill, check out the gift shops, and look for cape may diamonds! Come sunset, be sure to be back by the flag area for the flag ceremony. You won’t be dissappointed.
